Build up the walls of defence

You might have done everything you can to make it as hard as possible to access pornography, but as the saying goes, “Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool”. You therefore also need to build up your own internal defences so you are prepared for the times when those external defences that you have put in place may not be there and you are faced with temptation.

What did Christ do when he was faced with temptation in Matthew 4? He answered every temptation with a direct quote from scripture. Psalm 119:11 sums up Christ’s approach to temptation beautifully:

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you

Psalm 119:11 (ESV)

You can easily do the same by memorising a number of scriptures that relate to the subject of sexual immorality and God’s view of it. Why don’t you commit to memorising a short verse each week. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Job 31:1
  • Matthew 5:28
  • Mark 7:20-23
  • Romans 1:32
  • Romans 12: 1-2
  • 1 Corinthians 6:13
  • 1 Corinthians 6:18-20
  • 1 Corinthians 10:13
  • Galatians 5:19
  • Ephesians 5:3
  • Colossians 3:5
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4
  • Hebrews 13:4

You will be surprised how well you can memorise scripture if you commit yourself to repeating the same verse several times a day over the course of a week. Next time your carnal mind starts tempting you to view pornography you can follow your Lord’s example and respond with God’s word rather than trying to resist with your own willpower. This idea links nicely to the next step which Hezekiah took which was to command the people to remain silent and not respond to Rabshakeh.
